There are levels, but not in the traditional sense, because they have no affect on weapon strength or anything.

It's a skill-based gaining system, so as you use light weapons, you'll gain experience in the Light Weapons category. Finishing it nets you experience points, giving you a little boost to starting out.Experience points are divided into five categories: Combat, Light Weapons, Heavy Weapons, Trading and Commerce, and Mining. However, you are greeted with an excellent tutorial that teaches you the basics of movement and combat. After choosing your name, race, and starting planet, you're off to the game! You start with a basic ship that isn't capable of much, and a weapon that doesn't do much damage. Skills are gained in-game and everyone starts off with the same skills, so you don't have to worry about typical "classes" or anything. There's only one server-that is, only one "universe"-so there's no need to select that. You can choose any system to start.One thing I really applaud VO for is the character setup, because that's as far as the decisions go.

There are four areas of the universe: a section controlled by each nation, plus a group of systems called "gray space," which are basically unclaimed. You also choose your home world, a bit of a misnomer that I'll explain in a moment. You have six character slots and start the game by choosing your race from among the Itani, Serco or UIT. GameplayProbably the saddest part of this game revolves around the fantastic story… it has almost zero bearing on the game. Ships are mass produced and the most basic ones are free. You are a pilot in a universe that is divided, but fairly stable. The Serco even go as far as trading with the UIT to get better materials to make stronger ships and weapons, but even that isn't enough to do anything.Enter the present day, 4432 AD. The Serco end up trying to attack, but the Itani defense is too strong, and they up in a stalemate. The Itani go exploring and end up checking out how the Serco are getting along the Serco answer by attacking. Hundreds of years later, the Itani and UIT are established in their respective planets. They change their name to the United Independent Territories, or UIT for short. Eventually, the independents, led by several companies that make spaceships, leave the planet for a new home as well. Over the next few generations, diplomatic relations between the Serco and independents starts going sour. In a desperate attempt to avoid extinction, most of the remaining Itani build a ship and fly away from the insanity.At the same time, some Itani members and even some Serco, all of whom protest the war and never got onboard with either side, create some independent cities. However, the Serco begin a great offensive in 2661, and end up nearly wiping out the Itani. A great war breaks out in the year 2651, and in the early years and battles, the Itani takes control. Meanwhile, another group, called the Itani, doesn't think messing with nature is in everyone's best interests.As always, conflicts of interest lead to conflicts of weapons. One group, called the Serco, thinks it's best to change people at the genetic level to make them more resistant to the slightly different features of Terra II compared to Earth.

Literally 90% of the manual (54 pages out of 60) is back story. Vendetta Online is all about deep, dark space. StoryThe premise is very deep and detailed, which is extremely cool. And unfortunately, as it is, VO suffers from almost every disease that can plague an MMO. We have to rate and critique a game as it is. VO is a great example of the starting block of a game, and in time (due to its online nature), it may very well evolve into the second coming of MMOs.However, we can't rate a game on what could have been or can be (indeed, if we did, every title here would score a perfect 10, even Extreme Paintbrawl). Not because it's an MMO, but because, to paraphrase a cliché, we can't give points for effort. Oh man… it's so hard to review games like Vendetta Online.
